Use of new antiretroviral drugs and classes in Bahia, Brazil: a real life experience on salvage therapy of AIDS patients BJID
Brites,Carlos; Nóbrega,Isabella; Netto,Eduardo Martins.
ABSTRACTAntiretroviral therapy has significantly evolved in the last decade, with an increasing number of new drugs and classes. Currently, even heavily experienced patients can be successfully treated with new regimens. In Brazil, the recent incorporation of some new antiretroviral drugs made it possible to suppress HIV plasma viremia in most treated patients, with significant benefits in terms of quality of life and survival. However, little has been published on outcomes of patients under new drugs-based regimens. We reviewed the safety and efficacy of antiretroviral regimens using recently introduced drugs in Bahia. Our results confirm that patients using darunavir, raltegravir, enfuvirtide, or etravirine presented with a high rate of virological...

Vaccination coverage and immunity against hepatitis B among HIV-infected patients in South Brazil BJID
Martins,Saulo; Livramento,Andréa do; Andrigueti,Michelle; Kretzer,Iara Fabricia; Machado,Marcos José; Spada,Celso; Treitinger,Arício.
Evidence-based strategies to improve the hepatitis B virus (HBV) vaccination coverage rates might help to reduce the burden caused by co-infection with HBV and human immuno-deficiency virus (HIV). In this study, the aim was to evaluate the vaccination coverage and immunity against HBV among HIV-infected individuals in South Brazil, and identify factors that are associated with compliance patterns and antibody reactivity. Three hundred HIV-infected men and women were included in this survey. The patients answered a standardized questionnaire, and vaccination cards were checked in order to assess hepatitis B vaccine status. A blood sample was collected for quantitative determination of antibody to hepatitis B virus surface antigen (anti-HBs). Participants...

Vaccination coverage in a cohort of HIV-infected patients receiving care at an AIDS outpatient clinic in Espírito Santo, Brazil BJID
Pinto Neto,Lauro Ferreira da Silva; Vieira,Julia Vescovi; Ronchi,Nathália Rossoni.
Abstract This cross-sectional study assessed the immunization status of human immune deficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients receiving care at an outpatient clinic in Brazil. The sociodemographic characteristics, CD4 count and HIV viral load of 281 out of 612 adult outpatients were analyzed. A total of 331 patients were excluded because of no availability of vaccination cards. Chi-square or Fisher's exact test were used. Immunization coverage was higher for diphtheria/tetanus (59.79%) and hepatitis B (56.7%), and lowest for hepatitis A (6.8%) and for meningococcal group C (6%). Only 11.74% of the patients had received the influenza virus vaccine yearly since their HIV-infection diagnosis. No vaccination against influenza (p < 0.034) or hepatitis B (p...

Validity and reliability of the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey questionnaire version 2 among people living with HIV in Brazil BJID
Lins-Kusterer,Liliane; Valdelamar,Juliet; Aguiar,Carolina Villa Nova; Menezes,Marta Silva; Martins Netto,Eduardo; Brites,Carlos.
ABSTRACT Background: The 36-Item Short Form Health Survey questionnaire (SF-36) is a widely used instrument for evaluating health-related quality-of-life (HRQoL). The psychometric validation of the SF-36 version 2.0 (SF-36v2) in HIV-infected patients had not yet conducted in Brazil. Aim: To test data quality, reliability and validity of the SF-36v2 as a measure of HRQoL among Brazilian individuals living with HIV. Methods: A cross-sectional study included 393 HIV-infected patients in whom HRQoL was assessed by using the SF-36v2 questionnaire. Demographic characteristics, socioeconomic status and clinical data were also collected. The SF-36 version 1 translated into Brazilian-Portuguese was adapted and introduced version 2 improvements according to the...

Vascular access-related infections in HIV patients undergoing hemodialysis: case description and literature review BJID
Castro,Carlos E. Figueroa; Madariaga,Miguel G..
Poor immune status, the use of a vascular access different from an AV fistula, and intravenous drug use (IDU) may favor increased rates of vascular access infections among HIV infected patients on hemodialysis. Staphylococcus spp. and Streptococcus spp. are the main cause of these infections, but Gram-negative rods and fungi have been found as well. Using an AV fistula when possible, and eliciting a history of IVDU on every visit may prevent this type of infection. When infections are present, coverage for both Gram-positive and negative organisms is recommended. Additional studies specifically addressing the issue of vascular access infection in HIV infected patients are required.

Vasculitis: an unusual manifestation in an HIV-infected patient BJID
Manuel,Ana; Victório,Tânia; Gomes,Constança; Martins,Telmo; Dias Neto,António.
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) positive patients may develop vasculitis, either mediated by immunological factors or by direct vascular injury. We describe a patient who developed manifestations suggestive of extremities vasculitis with no identifiable risk factors other than HIV, Epstein Barr and Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) type 1 co-infection. Physicians should be aware that vasculitis may have a heterogeneous presentation and occur associated with HIV infection. Although unusual, this association should be recognized for early proper treatment and prevention of ischemia.

Visceral Leishmaniasis/HIV co-infection in northeast Brazil: evaluation of outcome BJID
Távora,Lara Gurgel Fernandes; Nogueira,Marina Bizerril; Gomes,Sofia Teixeira.
ABSTRACT Since the beginning of the HIV burden, Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL)/HIV co-infection has been diagnosed not only in areas where VL is endemic (Latin America, India, Asia, Southern Europe), but also in North America, were it is considered an opportunistic disease. Clinical presentation, diagnostic tests sensitivity and treatment response in this population differs from VL alone. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate factors related to an unfavorable outcome in patients with VL/HIV diagnosis in a reference center in northeast Brazil. METHODS: Co-infected patients, diagnosed from 2010 to 2012, were included. Data from medical records were collected until one year after VL treatment completion. RESULTS: Forty-two HIV-infected patients were included in the...

Widespread use of anti-retroviral therapy elevated the prevalence of dyslipidemia in HIV-infected Chinese patients BJPS
Ye,He; Hong,Yu Min; Jing,Song Xiao; Hui,Yang; Juan,Zhang Xiao; Wei,Zhao Yan.
With the widespread use of high-efficiency antiretroviral therapy (HAART), the life expectancy of HIV-infected patients has been significantly extended. However, the metabolic complications among HIV-infected patients treated with HAART have become the most common problem in the world. It is very important to explore the incidence of dyslipidaemia and studies on the role of potential risk factors in HIV-infected Chinese patients treated with HAART are sparse. Therefore, we designed current study, to investigate the effects of therapeutic intervention and continuous information support on the lifestyle of HIV/AIDS patients with dyslipidaemia. Three hundred and six HIV/AIDS patients admitted to the AIDS clinic in Beijing from January 2016 to January 2017...
